The Process Industry documentation can be divided into the following:

  • Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), shows the process schematically.  It will show what, how, amounts, raw material required and process requirements such as temperature, pressures, flows etc..

  • Piping and Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID), overall design for the process.  The process is defined by using specific symbols and letters.  The P&ID tag numbers allow to find information in other related documents.

  • Instrument List, an alphanumerical list of instrument tags and their functions.

  • Specifications forms, instrument data defining each device.  This is the specification form allowing vendors to quote as well providing information if part has to be replaced.

  • Logic Diagram, defines the logical operation of the process or system.  This is made of logical gates such as OR, AND, timers, etc..

  • Location Plans, actual location of devices.
